During the commencement of the Coroner’s inquest into the death of Afrobeats star, Ilerioluwa ‘Mohbad‘ Aloba, journalists were denied access to the Magistrate court in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The reason for restricting newsmen from the Mohbad’s inquest was not provided, leaving eyebrows raised.
Magistrate Taofikat Adedayo Shotobi, the Coroner overseeing the case, informed the involved parties during the proceedings that the day’s agenda would focus on discussing the procedures for hearing evidence.
The actual presentation of evidence is scheduled to begin on Friday, October 13.
Funmi Falana, who represented Mohbad’s family along with other lawyers at the inquest, informed reporters after the proceedings that the legal team would present witnesses to ensure that justice is served.
In a letter dated September 18, 2023, the law firm of Falana & Falana Chamber had requested the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the “very tragic” and “mysterious” death of Mohbad.
In response to the firm’s letter, Magistrate Shotobi stated that she had received directives from the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Hon. Justice Mojisola Dada, to convene an inquest in accordance with the relevant provisions of Section 14 & 15 of the CORONER’S SYSTEM LAW of Lagos State, Cap C15, Laws of Lagos State 2015.
