In a recent update on Friday, August 18, Musk declared that users on X will no longer have the ability to block other accounts.

However, this change will not affect the blocking of direct messages (DMs), allowing users to retain control over who can privately contact them.

The block feature, commonly used across social media platforms, permitted users to prevent specific accounts from seeing their content or engaging with their posts, offering a sense of security and influence over interactions. Nonetheless, Musk's decision to eliminate this feature has sparked both interest and criticism from users.

In his words:

“Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs.”

“It makes no sense.”

As an alternative to blocking, Musk introduced the idea of using the mute button. By muting an account, the user will no longer see its posts in their feed. However, users can still access the muted account's content through links, and the muted account can still view the content of the user who muted them.

This fresh approach offers a measure of control over one's feed while maintaining the possibility of interaction.

Following the announcement, the X platform experienced a wave of reactions from its user base.
