A potential disaster was narrowly avoided on Sunday night when an aeroplane carrying the Arsenal women's football team caught fire on the runway. The incident occurred as the team was returning from their first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg. The plane was attempting to take off from Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport when a bird flew into one of the engines, causing a loud noise and resulting in flames from the left engine of the Boeing 737. Thankfully, the pilots were quick to evacuate the passengers to safety.

Arsenal later released a statement confirming that the team arrived home safely on Monday morning. The statement read, "Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening. As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance." The incident could have been a lot worse, but thanks to the quick thinking of the pilots, everyone was able to evacuate the plane safely.
