Osimhen scores hat trick in Nigeria's victory against Sao Tome in AFCON Qualifiers

Nigeria secured their spot in the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a commanding 6-0 victory against Sao Tome on Sunday, September 10.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria dominated the game from the start, with Osimhen leading the charge. Osimhen opened the scoring in the 13th minute, heading in from a corner situation.

In the 27th minute, the Super Eagles doubled their lead as Ademola Lookman found the net with a well-placed shot.

The halftime score was 2-0 in favor of Nigeria, but they didn't stop there. Taiwo Awoniyi added a third goal with a right-footed shot, assisted by Kelechi Iheanacho.

In the 68th minute, Nigeria was awarded a penalty after Osimhen was fouled by the Sao Tome goalkeeper, and Osimhen made no mistake, converting the spot-kick.

Osimhen completed his hat trick with a goal 10 minutes from time, and Samuel Chukwueze provided the assist.

Nigeria didn't stop there, as Chukwueze added a sixth goal in the 84th minute with a left-footed shot.

This victory sealed Nigeria's qualification for the 2024 AFCON, and they finished as group leaders with 15 points from six matches, ahead of Guinea Bissau. Both teams will be competing in the tournament in Cote D’Ivoire in January 2024.
