The Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW) has formally appealed to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, to reconsider and withdraw the 48-hour ultimatum he recently issued to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, amid the escalating tension between the two prominent Yoruba monarchs. The ultimatum was prompted by a growing feud related to the conferment of a prestigious traditional title, which has attracted national attention and raised concerns over unity among Yoruba leaders.

The feud reportedly began when the Ooni of Ife conferred the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Chief Dotun Sanusi during a ceremony in Ibadan. The Alaafin, however, rejected the conferment, arguing that only his palace has the legal and cultural authority to bestow pan-Yoruba titles. Through his spokesperson, the Alaafin demanded the revocation of the title within a strict 48-hour timeframe, creating tension between the two palaces and stirring public debate across Yoruba communities and social media platforms.

In response to the growing controversy, the YCW issued a statement on Wednesday, signed by its Publicity Secretary, Charles Adeyemi. The council described the feud as “a matter that demands calm, reflection, and unity rather than division,” emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and respect for Yoruba cultural heritage. The statement stressed that both monarchs are not only traditional leaders but also sacred custodians of Yoruba history, dignity, and culture. It called for restraint, mediation, and dialogue to prevent further escalation.

The council urged the Alaafin to retract the ultimatum while awaiting the upcoming convocation of the Yoruba Obas Conference, which is expected to provide a formal platform for reconciliation and the creation of a lasting peace pact within Yorubaland. The YCW also appealed to Yoruba elders, statesmen, and cultural custodians to intervene constructively, ensuring that the feud does not undermine the unity of the Yoruba people or the respect accorded to these esteemed traditional institutions.

Additionally, the council called on Yoruba citizens, particularly youths and active social media users, to exercise restraint and avoid spreading divisive comments or unverified information. “Our words carry weight, and in times of tension, they should be used to build bridges, not walls. The Alaafin and the Ooni represent eternal symbols of Yoruba civilization. Their unity is vital for cultural preservation and the collective dignity of the Yoruba nation,” the statement emphasized. The YCW highlighted that peaceful resolution and mutual respect between the Alaafin and the Ooni are essential for safeguarding Yoruba traditions and fostering intergenerational harmony.

Netizens Reactions…

Tomilola Olalekan Sowo reacted; “All these groups are just making this Alaafin think he’s doing the right thing by advising him. What can he even do to Ooni? Let him face the shame he plans to bring upon himself now. Joker.”

utmostdecasual commented; “It’s better we iron it out now. Ooni is superior to Alaafin. Ile Ife has been in existence before any town in Yorubaland. Last born of Oduduwa, Oranmiyan founded the Oyo empire and the Benin kingdom. Obatala, the second born, enthroned the Ife Kingdom from Oduduwa, who is their father. Ooni is superior.”

Engr Package Yemaks said; “Ooni is Alaafin’s great-grandfather. Ooni is the real Oduduwa. The first Ooni of Ile Ife is Oduduwa. So Ooni occupies the spot of Alaafin’s forefathers. Go and study Yoruba history well.”

Jimoh Oluwabunmi Ahmed stated; “Alaafin will be embarrassed on either side he chooses. Ooni has more supporters than Alaafin in the current age. This is not the era of using gunpowder to assert dominance.”

Akin Adeyanju wrote; “Alaafin should be fighting for the creation of a new Oyo state by now. Abi which chieftaincy helps? Abi Oyo wants to remain under Ibadan forever?”[/p>

*OKANLOMO TITLE: YORUBA YOUTHS CAUTION ALAAFIN PRESS CREW AGAINST STIRRING DIVISION BETWEEN ALAAFIN AND OÒNI*

The foremost apex Yoruba youth group, under the aegis of the Yoruba Youths Council (YYC), has issued a strong caution to the press crew of the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, coordinated by Mr. Bode Durojaye, Chief Press Secretary, over their recent derogatory remarks concerning the Okanlomo Oodua title bestowed upon renowned business mogul, Chief Jubril Dòtun Sanusi, CEO of Ilaji Hotel and Resort, Ibadan, by the Oòni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.

In a statement made available to journalists by the group’s spokesperson, Ogbeni Ajibode Abd’Kabir, the Yoruba Youths Council described the press crew’s comments as “a monumental embarrassment to the entire traditional institution of Yorubaland, and a deliberate ploy to profit from an unnecessary rift between the two highly revered monarchs.”

The statement emphasized that Yoruba traditional institutions remain the pride of the race and must never be dragged into personal or political agendas. The youths warned that any attempt to ignite division between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Oòni of Ife would be vehemently resisted by Yoruba youths both at home and in the diaspora.

While reaffirming their utmost respect for the Alaafin of Oyo and the Oòni of Ife as fathers of the Yoruba nation, the group urged Mr. Durojaye to desist from actions capable of undermining the aged-long standing brotherhood, peace, and unity among Yoruba traditional rulers.

Ogbeni Ajibode clarified that although it is not in the guiding custom of the Yoruba Youths Council to interfere in the affairs of royal fathers across Yoruba Land, but the repeated attacks from the Alaafin’s press crew against the Oòni of Ife have become consistently worrisome and embarrassing to the collective Yoruba identity. He stressed that contrary to the misinformation being circulated, the Oòni of Ife, as the father of all and current Arole Oodua—the progenitor of the entire Omoluabi/Yoruba/Oodua race—bestowed the prestigious title of Okanlomo Oodua on Chief Dòtun Sanusi out of his magnanimous vision for a better Yoruba Land. Any attempt to ridicule or misrepresent such an exalted title, he added, is disrespectful, degrading, and misleading.

The group therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians who know Mr. Durojaye to prevail upon him to desist from his unprofessional conduct of attacking the revered Oòni of Ife. They stressed that Yoruba youths will no longer condone any form of public disrespect targeted at the Oòni of Ife, the Alaafin of Oyo, or any traditional ruler in the Southwest.

“It is important to note that as descendants of the Omoluabi (Yoruba/Odùduwà) race worldwide, we are promoters and respecters of both our revered Royal Fathers. We will go to any length to defend their sacred stools from agents of disunity and destruction,” the statement read.

The Yoruba Youths Council reaffirmed that both the Oòni and the Alaafin are unquestionably entitled to confer chieftaincy titles on deserving individuals. Chief Dòtun Sanusi, they maintained, is not only a worthy recipient but also a respected philanthropist whose investments, empowerment initiatives, and businesses have created employment opportunities for Yoruba youths and contributed immensely to the socio-economic progress of Nigeria.

The youths further advised the public, Nigerians, and corporate organizations to disregard the unnecessary controversy, affirming that the Oòni’s conferment of the Okanlomo Oodua title does not in any way diminish the sanctity of either of the revered stools.

In conclusion, the Yoruba Youths Council restated its commitment to safeguarding the peace, unity, and prosperity of Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.

Omoluabi ni mi! Omo Kaaro Ojiire!!

Long live Oòni Arole Oodua
Long live Alaafin Oyo
Long live Yoruba Land
