Nigerian singer, Ayra Starr, faces online backlash after a video surfaced of her shaking hands with the veteran juju musician, King Sunny Ade, and other notable dignitaries.
The video, shared on Twitter by user @gemyoruba, prompted criticism for Ayra Starr's actions.
In the footage, Ayra Starr is introduced to the men seated close to Burna Boy’s mother. Contrary to Yoruba culture norms and their honorary status, she opted for a standing handshake instead of the traditional kneeling greeting, sparking outrage from netizens who deemed her disrespectful and not in tune with her cultural roots.
Reactions to Ayra Starr's handshake with King Sunny Ade
UnkleAyo expressed concern: “Excuse me for one moment. The man in the suit is not who I think it is. Please tell me it’s not who I think it is. Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, @ayrastarr, you stretched your hands to shake that man? Omo 2002? Egbami.”
ayurexars remarked: “She Dey shake KSA, that man might be older than her father.”
smoke253 observed: “KSA was even more respectful than @ayrastarr in this video, which, to me, is a shame to these GenZ children 👧👧👧.”
Capolutiti reacted: “Whether she knows it’s KSA sitting or not, she’s mannerless. This is Africa, not Obodo Oyinbo land. No need to whitewash it.”
