The announcement regarding the renaming of these airports was communicated through a memorandum released by the Federal Ministry of Aviation on June 1, 2023. The memo, signed by Joke Olatunji, acting on behalf of the Director of Airport Operations, outlined the government's intention to implement these changes.

The renaming of the airports is part of the broader aviation sector reforms undertaken by the government. This initiative serves as a tribute to the selected individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to Nigeria's development and progress.

Among the airports that have been renamed, the Maiduguri Airport in Borno State has been dedicated to the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledging his tenure and service to the nation.

Furthermore, the Port Harcourt Airport in Rivers State has been renamed after the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, in recognition of his indelible impact on the country. Similarly, the Nasarawa Airport has been immortalized in honor of Usman Dan Fodio, the esteemed founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, who played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria's history.

The renaming initiative extends to various other airports across the country. The Benin Airport in Edo State now carries the name of the late Oba Akenzua II, paying homage to his significant contributions to the region and its people.

Likewise, the Ebonyi Airport in Ebonyi State has been renamed to honor the late Senate President Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo. In Oyo State, the Ibadan Airport has been dedicated to the memory of the late Premier of the old Western Region, Samuel Ladoke Akintola, in recognition of his impactful leadership.
