A tragic incident has left a community in mourning after a one-year-old boy, identified as Amillio Gutierrez, tragically died after being left inside a hot car while his young mom allegedly attended a cosmetic lip procedure appointment in Bakersfield, California.

According to law enforcement authorities, the boy’s mother, 20-year-old Maya Hernandez, left Amillio and his two-year-old brother strapped in their car seats inside a Toyota Corolla Hybrid on June 29. Hernandez was reportedly inside the Always Beautiful Med Spa, where she went for a lip filler enhancement procedure.

Police reports indicate that Hernandez left the children unattended in the vehicle at around 3 p.m. and returned at approximately 4:30 p.m. Upon her return, she discovered that Amillio was foaming at the mouth, convulsing, and unresponsive. His condition was immediately critical.

Medical responders revealed that Amillio’s body temperature had soared to a dangerous 107°F (41.7°C). Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital before 6 p.m. Meanwhile, his older brother miraculously survived the ordeal but was reportedly severely dehydrated and traumatized.

Hernandez told investigators that she believed the air conditioning was left running inside the vehicle to keep the children cool. However, detectives discovered that the Toyota Corolla Hybrid had an automatic shut-off feature that turned the engine off after one hour to prevent emissions and fuel waste. Officers at the scene reported that the car was already warm upon their arrival, confirming that the AC had stopped working long before Hernandez returned.

Authorities estimate that the children were trapped in the hot car for at least 90 minutes in the intense California summer heat, leading to the fatal outcome.

Additional details from the investigation revealed that a nurse at the spa stated Hernandez had asked about bringing her children inside the clinic but ultimately left them in the car without disclosing their presence. The lip filler procedure she underwent reportedly lasted only 15 to 20 minutes, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.

Amillio’s grandmother, Katie Martinez, shared her grief in an emotional tribute posted on a GoFundMe page set up to support funeral expenses and the surviving brother. She wrote: “He always had a smile no matter what. His brother will forever be without his best friend.” Martinez emphasized the joy and light Amillio brought to the family and described the deep void his passing has left behind.

Hernandez has since been arrested and formally charged with involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty. She is currently being held on more than $1 million bail and is expected to appear in court on Friday, July 11, where she will face the charges formally.

In memory of Amillio, a candlelight vigil was held on Saturday, July 5, attended by family members, friends, and local community members who gathered to mourn his untimely death and honor his short but impactful life. Loved ones shared that he had just started walking a few days before his tragic passing, highlighting the innocence and promise lost in this heartbreaking event.
