[p]A group of Nigerians who wrote their computer-based test (CBT) at a Pearson VUE third-party test center in Ibadan are being investigated by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) over suspicion of fraudulent or incorrect entry to the register. The NMC, which oversees the registration of nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom, was alerted to "anomalous data" by Pearson VUE, the company that administers the Test of Competence (ToC) for overseas nurses applying to join the NMC register. The statement by the NMC revealed that 1,970 candidates took their CBT at the Ibadan center, but only 512 of them are on the NMC register. As a result, the candidates have been asked to retake the test.

[p]The statement from the NMC revealed that it has written to the candidates involved to set out what has happened and to inform them that cases will be opened to determine whether or not they gained fraudulent or incorrect entry to the register. More candidates have also applied to join the register but are not yet on it, and their applications have been paused pending further investigation. The NMC has stated that it will be writing to these applicants to request that they retake the test, and to provide more information that will be used to make a final decision about their applications.

[p]According to the NMC, Pearson VUE has reviewed all data relating to the CBT from every test site globally, and there is no evidence of similar activity at any other site. The NMC has emphasized that its paramount concern is to maintain the integrity of the register to protect the public, while ensuring that any investigations about individuals are conducted objectively and transparently, without any unfair discrimination.
