A young Nigerian lady has recently sparked widespread reactions online after narrating the story of a close friend who, despite once identifying strongly as a feminist and publicly rejecting traditional expectations of women, eventually abandoned her staunch principles to get married and is now expecting a child.
Sharing her experience on X, @itzchristunique explained that her friend frequently emphasized her independence, often boasting about how she did not need a man to succeed in life. She invested heavily in her businesses and took pride in managing her finances, lifestyle, and career goals entirely on her own.
The lady’s friend had also made it clear that she would only consider marriage if a man agreed to strict terms, including equality in decision-making and full commitment to her conditions. Their differing perspectives on relationships caused tension, with @itzchristunique often challenging her friend’s rigid stance on love and partnership.
From feminist to full housewife
In her post, the lady recounted: “I once had a feminist friend who strongly believed she could do all things without the help of any man. She was well-established and had multiple investments to her name. One day I told her that she will eventually fall in love with someone and might find herself under his influence. She insisted that would never happen. She explained that she was not ready to be committed to any man and, being a feminist, she believed in equality. So, if she were to marry, the man must accept her terms entirely.”
She continued: “I warned her that it would be nearly impossible to find a man who would agree to such strict conditions and that she might remain unmarried if she stayed rigid. My words angered her, and she stopped talking to me for a while.”
The twist came earlier this year when her friend sent her a wedding invitation. @itzchristunique recalled asking, “Did he accept your terms?” and her friend laughed, replying, “Christy, let’s forget about that. I’m currently moving from Abuja down to PH where he’s based.” She added, humorously noting that she is still puzzled over whose terms actually prevailed. The friend is now pregnant, and @itzchristunique anticipates becoming an aunt soon.”
Social media reactions
The revelation immediately generated diverse opinions online. Some users highlighted the irony and unpredictability of love, while others criticized the former feminist for seemingly abandoning her beliefs. Below are notable reactions from social media users:
RealSirPee reacted: “Truth be told, she has fallen in love, emotion is everywhere. She could be submissive and act cool, but every now and then, that bossy attitude will surface. She will challenge him, call him names, and say hurtful words. How do I know this? I had one.”
iamqueenese commented: “Moral of the story: don’t trust feminists. They will mislead you and eventually submit to the authority of a man.”
Saodami1 stated: “Everybody needs their own person. She had not met the right person before, which is why she said all those things. Besides, she was being vicarious back then too.”
Iamkolotayo wrote: “Na heartbreak dey push many of them dey talk wetin dem no fit do. God wey create both male and female dey play abi ??”
ProductivityVA noted: “Life has a funny way of humbling all our strong beliefs. At the end of the day, love will test every theory we hold. Congratulations to her and to you, Aunty in the making.”
The story underscores the complexities of personal beliefs versus real-life experiences, illustrating how love and relationships can challenge even the most firmly held convictions. It also sparked a broader discussion about feminism, independence, and the evolving dynamics of modern relationships in Nigeria.
