The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has issued a directive for the apprehension of the owner of the collapsed two-storey building on Lagos Street, Garki Village, Abuja. According to FCT Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA), the incident resulted in the unfortunate deaths of two individuals, with 37 others evacuated and taken to hospitals.
During his visit to the scene on Thursday, Wike instructed the Permanent Secretary of FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade, to cover the medical expenses of those hospitalized. He also urged the Department of Development Control, FCTA, to swiftly relocate the affected community members. Emphasizing the importance of adhering to minimum standards in construction, he extended his sympathies to the deceased victims' families and assured prompt payment of medical bills.
The Director of Development Control, Mr Mukhtar Galadima, explained that the area was unplanned and housed a local community. Galadima clarified that the building served residential and commercial purposes. Commending security agencies and contractors for their support during the evacuation, the Permanent Secretary lauded their collaborative efforts. Dr Idriss Abass, Director-General of FCT FEMA, reported that rescue efforts were ongoing to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the debris.
Victims of the incident, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recounted their losses and requested assistance from the government. Ms Glory Perekeme, a restaurant and bar owner, estimated her losses at N5 million, appealing for support to rebuild. Similarly, Mrs Ann Anyi, who owned a laundry and shoe business, shared her distress and hope for the recovery of salvageable items from the rubble.
