Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru, has gifted ₦10 million to Jeremiah Obaji for trekking an impressive 633 kilometers from Lagos to Abakaliki, highlighting both the remarkable resilience of the citizen and the governor’s commitment to recognizing extraordinary efforts by his people.
Obaji, a 37-year-old businessman and native of the Effium/Ezza-Effium community in Ohaukwu LGA, embarked on the journey on August 22, 2025. His trek was meant to show support and appreciation for Governor Nwifuru’s peace initiatives in the area, which has been plagued by violent clashes and unrest since January 2021, leading to numerous casualties and displacement of families.
During the 17-day trek, Obaji traveled by day, resting at night in various villages along his route. Armed with minimal supplies, he carried only two T-shirts and a single pair of shoes, enduring harsh conditions and demonstrating extraordinary determination to complete the journey. His arrival in Abakaliki on Sunday morning was met with a warm reception from cheering supporters who lined the streets to welcome him.
Upon arrival, Obaji met with representatives of the governor, including Chief of Staff Emmanuel Echiegu, who officially received him. Governor Nwifuru praised Obaji’s commitment and courage in undertaking the trek, presenting him with a ₦10 million cash reward as recognition for his extraordinary display of dedication and for highlighting the importance of peace in the state.
Speaking to the media after the event, Obaji shared that his trek was motivated by the governor’s active role in fostering reconciliation and restoring harmony to a community that had suffered significant losses. He said:
“My community was in a serious crisis. Many lives were lost, and properties were destroyed. I trekked to Abakaliki to thank Governor Nwifuru for restoring peace and showing leadership that prioritizes the well-being of Ebonyians.”
Obaji’s media aide, Wisdom Nwedene, also commended the governor for his efforts in bringing stability and unity to the troubled region. He emphasized that the large turnout of residents welcoming Obaji symbolized the value the people place on peace and effective leadership in the state. He added that such initiatives inspire hope and encourage citizens to actively participate in community-building efforts.
The extraordinary feat of trekking over 600 kilometers to honor peace initiatives underscores both the resilience of Ebonyi citizens and the positive impact of Governor Nwifuru’s policies.
