A Nigerian woman has shared her painful experience after being heartlessly forced out of her home by her late husband’s siblings, just 10 days after his passing, leaving her and her child stranded and devastated.
This deeply emotional and tragic story was shared widely on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) by user @ChuksEricE, sparking outrage and sympathy from thousands of Nigerians and social media users around the world.
The viral post features a video of the grieving woman recounting her ordeal in tears, narrating how she faced extreme hardship while caring for her sick husband and how she ultimately ended up being betrayed and thrown out by those she once called family.
She revealed that her husband had battled a serious illness for an extended period. During this time, she stood by him steadfastly, spending nearly ₦12.8 million on medical treatment in the desperate hope of saving his life. Despite her tireless efforts and financial sacrifices, he sadly passed away, leaving her to cope with the loss and responsibilities alone.
In her narration, she explained that after her husband's death, his family members immediately attempted to sell his land, which she firmly resisted in an effort to protect his legacy and secure a future for their son. This opposition reportedly led to resentment and a plot to evict her forcibly.
She recounted that on the day she was chased out, she had left home briefly to buy something and also to drop her son off at school. It was during this short outing that she received a shocking and heartbreaking call informing her that her house roof had been dismantled and her belongings had been thrown outside in the rain.
In her own words, she expressed the depth of her pain: “Since my husband fell sick, no one helped him; we suffered. We spent a lot of money, almost ₦12.8 million on his treatment. We did not sell the land. Ten days after his death, they removed everything from my house. I had gone to buy something and taken my son to school when I got the call. When I rushed home, I saw all my belongings outside.”
Her story has ignited a broader conversation online about the mistreatment of widows in Nigeria and the harmful cultural practices that often leave women vulnerable after losing their husbands. Many commenters have called for justice and intervention from human rights organizations and authorities to protect her and her son.
Several social media users have also offered to support her financially and provide temporary shelter, showcasing the power of collective compassion and community solidarity in times of crisis.
