A couple, Atsuko Okatsuka, 34, from Los Angeles, California, and her husband Ryan Harper Gray, have been thrown into a state of shock after discovering that they were never legally married, six years after their wedding ceremony, which was witnessed by around 180 family and friends.
The couple discovered the shocking news when the husband, Ryan, tried to add his wife to his health insurance, and they were asked to prove the legitimacy of their marriage.
After realizing they couldn't find the marriage certificate, the couple requested a copy from the City of Los Angeles, only to find out that their paperwork was never filed. Atsuko Okatsuka, who is a stand-up comedian, told Insider that they were asked to provide proof of their marriage, but they couldn't find their marriage certificate, despite thinking that they had one at some point. She added that they are not very good at paperwork and thought the marriage certificate would be in their mailbox when they returned from a holiday in Tokyo and Taipei, but it wasn't.
Ryan called the city to inquire about the situation and was informed that they were never legally married. Atsuko said, "There was no record of us being married. Though we had a wedding in 2017 with 180 of our closest friends and family, the paperwork had never been filed."
