Chelsea Football Club has officially designated Reece James as the club's new captain in anticipation of the forthcoming Premier League season. At 23 years old, the English international is set to take over the captaincy from Cesar Azpilicueta, who departed the Blues to join Atletico Madrid on a free transfer earlier in the summer.

Having been nurtured within Chelsea's academy, Reece James has been a dedicated member of the west London club since the age of six. Speaking on the matter, the newly appointed head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, shared his satisfaction with the decision, stating, "This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season. He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas."

Reece James, in his turn, expressed his elation about the new role, saying, "I'm so happy to take on the role and responsibility. I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited. I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family."

The upcoming Premier League match against Liverpool could mark Reece James's debut as club captain, as Chelsea is set to face Liverpool at home in their season opener. The anticipation is high as James prepares to lead the team onto the field under his new role as captain.
