Former Director of Football at Everton, Marcel Brands, revealed the club's pursuit of Mikel Arteta as their manager before Arsenal made their move.
Brands detailed Everton's interest in Arteta, viewing him as an ideal candidate for the managerial role due to his blend of playing experience and emerging coaching prowess.
Despite Arteta serving as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the time, Brands saw potential for him to excel as a head coach.
Speaking with Dutch outlet SoccerNews, the former Everton Chief expressed admiration for Arteta’s preparation and coaching passion.
He recounted a meeting at Arteta’s residence where he was thoroughly impressed by the Spaniard’s knowledge and readiness for the managerial role.
However, Arteta opted to accept the managerial position at Arsenal in December 2019, shortly after Everton's pursuit failed.
The availability of Carlo Ancelotti also shifted Everton’s focus, ultimately leading to Ancelotti’s appointment instead.
Ancelotti's tenure at Everton lasted only 18 months before he departed for Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Arteta's decision to join Arsenal marked the beginning of his commendable managerial career, where he has made significant strides.
Under his guidance, Arsenal have maintained a strong position in the Premier League and remain title contenders.
He has also led the London club to their first quarter-final appearance in the UEFA Champions League since 2014, where they will face Bayern Munich.
