The Nigerian international, who only recently resumed training after what insiders described as a turbulent and uncertain summer, is yet to regain a place in the matchday lineup. Head coach Ivan Juric, alongside director Luca Percassi, has maintained a strong stance that discipline and loyalty to the jersey must always come first before individual talent.

Juric stands firm on discipline

Reports reveal that Lookman had tried to force a move to Inter Milan during the recently concluded transfer window. His attempt included spending nearly two weeks away from Bergamo before eventually returning to training with his teammates.

Although many expected him to be eased back into action, Juric ruled him out, saying he would not tolerate half-hearted dedication. The coach reportedly told the media that he would never “beg” any player to put on the Atalanta shirt, reiterating that he only wants players who are fully ready to give their all.

Percassi backs the coach’s decision

Club director Luca Percassi echoed Juric’s stance during an interview with DAZN Italia. He stressed that the club operates on basic but firm principles—principles that require absolute concentration, loyalty, and readiness from every squad member.

“I don’t really have much more to add to what the coach already made clear,” Percassi explained. “We are in full agreement with his words. Lookman is undoubtedly an important player for Atalanta, but talent alone is not enough. Our philosophy is simple: only players who are mentally and physically prepared to give 100 per cent for this jersey will be trusted to represent the team on the pitch.”

He further confirmed that Lookman’s omission from the Lecce game was a direct consequence of the unresolved situation surrounding his commitment to the squad’s cause.

Juric’s new era takes shape

This season marks a new chapter for Atalanta under Ivan Juric, who succeeded the long-serving Gian Piero Gasperini during the summer. The club has tasked him with rebuilding a competitive spirit and instilling discipline across the squad as they pursue their first win of the campaign following disappointing draws against Pisa and Parma.

Percassi noted that Juric embodies the traditional spirit of Atalanta, which has always been built on grit, sacrifice, and relentless effort. “This is the DNA of our club,” he insisted. “The coach reflects exactly what the fans expect—a fighting mentality, resilience, and players who respect the badge regardless of their technical brilliance.”

While Lookman’s future with the club remains uncertain, Atalanta have made it clear that no player, no matter how talented, is bigger than the team’s values.
