Anthony Martial has confirmed his departure from Manchester United in an emotional message to the club’s fans.
The French forward joined United from Monaco in September 2015 for £36 million, making him the most expensive teenager in football at the time.
Martial made an immediate impact, scoring in his debut against Liverpool and netting four goals in his first four matches.
His best season came in 2019/20 when he scored 23 goals. Despite winning the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Europa League with United, Martial has struggled with form and injuries.
This hampered his reaching double figures in goals in recent seasons.
With his contract expiring this summer, Martial announced his exit on Instagram, expressing his gratitude for the club and its supporters.
“Dear Manchester United fans. It’s with great emotion that I write to you today to say goodbye.
“After nine incredible years at the club, the time has come for me to turn a new page in my career,” he wrote.
He continued, “Since I arrived in 2015, I have had the immense honour of wearing this shirt and playing in front of you, the best supporters in the world! Your passion and loyalty have been a constant source of motivation for me.”
Martial thanked his teammates, technical staff, and all club members, adding, “Manchester United will always be in my heart.
“This club has left its mark on my career and offered me an incredible opportunity to play in front of you.”
Martial only made seven starts for United this season, scoring twice.
