President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army. This significant appointment is seen as a vital move for the Nigerian military, especially given the ongoing security challenges facing the nation, which necessitate strong leadership and strategic direction.

A statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, underscored the administration’s commitment to bolstering the nation's security apparatus, emphasizing that “the appointment of Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff is part of the administration’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s security apparatus.” This proactive step is intended to ensure that the military is effectively positioned to address various threats and maintain peace and stability across Nigeria.

The statement further noted that Oluyede will serve in this role pending the return of the indisposed substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. This transition reflects the government’s effort to maintain continuity in leadership during challenging times while ensuring that the military remains functional and prepared for its duties.

Prior to this appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna. His extensive experience within the military and command roles has equipped him with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of military leadership in today’s security environment.

At 56 years old, Oluyede and General Lagbaja were coursemates and members of the 39th Regular Course, demonstrating a long-standing relationship and mutual understanding between the two leaders. His military career began when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, marking the start of a journey that has seen him rise to the rank of Major-General by September 2020, a testament to his dedication and competence within the armed forces.

Throughout his military career, Oluyede has held numerous commands, showcasing his versatility and leadership in various capacities. He served as Platoon Commander and adjutant at the 65 Battalion, Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion, Staff Officer at the Guards Brigade, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School. His diverse roles have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of military operations and strategies.

General Oluyede has also actively participated in several significant operations, including the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East theatre of operations, where he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade. His involvement in these operations highlights his commitment to regional stability and his capability to lead troops in various operational environments.

Over the years, Oluyede has received numerous honors for his meritorious service in various fields of military operations. Among these accolades are the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, recognition for Passing the Staff Course, and Membership in the National Institute. Additionally, he has been awarded the Field Command Medal, the Field Command Medal of Honour, and the Field Training Medal, reflecting his exemplary service and dedication to the Nigerian Army. He also received the coveted Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to military effectiveness.

In his personal life, Oluyede is married and has three children, balancing his professional responsibilities with his commitment to family, which he considers an important aspect of his life and career.
