Dr Mathew Adepoju, Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), revealed this pioneering initiative at a news conference in Abuja.

Dr. Adepoju said that Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) to advance this ambitious initiative.

He emphasized that this collaboration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of space exploration, placing the country among those actively involved in human spaceflight.

“This initiative opens up new avenues for scientific research and technological advancement,” stated Dr. Adepoju.

He emphasized how this initiative has the potential to advance technology and spark young people in Nigeria’s interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields.

The announcement comes as part of Nigeria's broader strategy to enhance its capabilities in space science and technology. The collaboration with SERA is expected to bring in cutting-edge expertise and resources, enabling Nigerian scientists and engineers to participate actively in the global space community. Dr. Adepoju highlighted the educational benefits, noting that exposure to space missions will inspire future generations and promote STEM education across the nation.

The planned mission, which is still in its early stages, will involve rigorous selection and training processes to ensure the chosen candidate is well-prepared for the demands of space travel. This landmark event is set to not only bolster national pride but also demonstrate Nigeria’s growing prowess in space technology and exploration.

In his address, Dr. Adepoju also touched on the potential economic benefits of the space program, suggesting that advancements in space technology could lead to innovations in various sectors, from telecommunications to environmental monitoring. The initiative, he reiterated, represents a bold step towards positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global space arena.
