HYPREP announced its plans to initiate shoreline cleanup and mangrove restoration in the oil-affected areas of Ogoniland.

During the commemoration of the 2023 World Environment Day, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, the Coordinator of HYPREP, expressed deep concern over the detrimental impact of plastic on mangrove biodiversity. He emphasized that plastic pollution not only suffocates and kills mangroves but also compromises their ability to sequester carbon dioxide and mitigate climate change, thus affecting local livelihoods as well.

According to Prof. Zabbey, HYPREP is committed to providing solutions to plastic pollution while simultaneously addressing the effects of hydrocarbon contamination. As a project entrusted with the responsibility to remediate and restore oil-polluted ecosystems, HYPREP aims to tackle the emerging threat posed by plastic pollution in mangroves of the Niger Delta region.

In line with the theme of the 2023 World Environment Day, the head of HYPREP suggested the promotion of sustainable alternatives and reusable products, along with a reduction in the production and consumption of plastic.
