As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is under increasing pressure to present a unified and formidable opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Many party stakeholders are turning their attention to the possible return of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as a figure capable of reconciling the various factions within the party and providing strong leadership ahead of the polls.
In an in-depth interview, Chief Conrad Terhide Utaan, a prominent PDP chieftain from Benue State, national chairmanship aspirant, and key ally of the G-5 governors, offered insights on the internal dynamics of the PDP, the potential return of Jonathan as a presidential candidate, and the broader challenges of harmonising relationships among influential political figures within the party.
Utaan emphasised that the PDP has reached a critical juncture, where healing divisions and uniting party factions is essential. According to him, only a leader with the stature and experience of Goodluck Jonathan could successfully navigate these complexities and restore cohesion within the party ranks.
“As a long-standing member of the PDP and a committed stakeholder, I can confidently state that our party requires genuine reconciliation at this stage. We need a figure of Jonathan’s influence to bring together all factions and provide the guidance necessary for a unified front heading into 2027,” he explained.
Reflecting on Jonathan’s political journey, Utaan noted that the former president faced significant criticism in the run-up to the 2015 elections, which many believe contributed to the APC’s rise to power. Nevertheless, he argued that time and reflection have highlighted Jonathan’s unique capacity for leadership and political diplomacy, which are now crucial for stabilising the party and strengthening democratic structures in Nigeria.
“Jonathan’s return is not solely about his personal ambitions or the PDP; it is about reinforcing democratic institutions, fostering inclusivity, and creating a political environment that benefits future generations,” Utaan added.
Addressing speculations surrounding other key political figures, such as Atiku Abubakar’s alleged defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi’s potential return to the PDP, Utaan stressed the importance of reconciliation and inclusivity within the party. He argued that managing internal tensions, especially involving high-profile figures like Nyesom Wike, is critical as the PDP prepares for its November 2025 national convention.
Utaan further highlighted that for the PDP to regain public trust and effectively challenge the APC, the party must prioritise addressing pressing issues affecting Nigerians, including economic challenges, insecurity, and social welfare concerns. Failure to do so, he warned, could undermine the party’s electoral prospects in 2027.
In conclusion, Chief Conrad Utaan urged all PDP members and stakeholders to work collaboratively, setting aside personal interests for the greater good of the party and the nation. He maintained that Goodluck Jonathan remains the only credible figure capable of uniting the PDP, restoring its integrity, and leading it to a stronger showing in the next general elections.
