The Federal Government of Nigeria, in conjunction with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), unveils a groundbreaking initiative – a new national ID card embedded with payment and social service delivery functionalities.

This innovative card, sanctioned by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, promises to revolutionize identification systems by integrating verifiable national identity features while facilitating access to both government and private services. Additionally, it aims to bolster financial inclusion efforts and empower citizens across the nation.

Among its notable features are machine-readable zones, biometric authentication capabilities, offline functionality, and its dual role as a debit/prepaid card.

It's emphasized that only registered citizens and legal residents possessing a National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to apply for this multifaceted card, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and enhancing security measures.
