The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in the recently concluded Rivers State Local Government Chairmanship and Councillorship elections, winning in 20 out of the 23 local government areas across the state. This overwhelming success further strengthens the APC’s political dominance in several regions within the state and highlights the growing influence of the party at the grassroots level.
In contrast, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure victory in only three local government areas. Among the LGAs won by the PDP was Opobo-Nkoro, the home local government area of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The PDP’s limited wins underscore the challenges the party currently faces in maintaining its traditional stronghold in Rivers politics, especially with the APC making significant inroads.
The results were officially declared on Sunday afternoon by the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr Michael Odey. The announcement took place at the commission’s headquarters situated on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, and drew the attention of party representatives, political observers, and media personnel who had gathered to witness the outcome of the highly anticipated election.
According to analysts, the outcome of the polls is expected to further deepen political rivalry in Rivers State, where tensions have remained high between the APC and the PDP. The split in political loyalties among key stakeholders, coupled with the ongoing power tussle between opposing camps, is likely to intensify debates and political maneuverings in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, reactions have begun to trail the declaration of results, with APC supporters celebrating their victory while PDP loyalists have expressed concerns over the fairness of the process. Political commentators believe that this development could significantly shape the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections and further fuel competition between the two dominant parties.
