The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has stirred mixed reactions across the state after presenting brand new luxury SUVs to all former deputy governors of Akwa Ibom. The move, described by his administration as a gesture of appreciation and recognition, comes at a time when the state has already earmarked a staggering ₦6 billion in the 2025 budget for the purchase of government vehicles.

The distribution of the SUVs was announced through the governor’s official X handle, where he explained that the gesture was not just about providing vehicles but about honouring the years of service and sacrifice put in by the former deputy governors. He emphasised that their efforts had laid a foundation for the state’s political and economic development and deserved acknowledgment in a tangible way.

Governor’s message of appreciation

“I presented brand new Land Cruisers to all former Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State as a token of appreciation for their years of service and sacrifice,” the governor stated in his post. He added that the gesture was designed to provide comfort and convenience to those who had played vital roles in the growth and progress of Akwa Ibom during their tenure in office.

While the governor’s post praised the dedication and contributions of past deputy governors, it provided little detail on the criteria used for selecting the specific SUVs or whether any additional packages or support were attached to the gifts. This has left some citizens speculating on the broader motivations behind the gesture.

Budgetary breakdown and allocations

The presentation of these luxury vehicles comes within the framework of the state’s 2025 vehicle acquisition plan. According to official budgetary records, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government allocated ₦3 billion for the purchase of 30 SUVs in 2025. Similarly, ₦1.6 billion was already spent between January and September 2024 on similar procurements. In addition to SUVs, the state has also budgeted ₦3 billion for 70 saloon cars, while ₦3.6 billion was reportedly spent on saloon cars in the same period.

Altogether, the budget for government vehicles in 2025 stands at about ₦6 billion, a figure that covers SUVs, saloon cars, and other luxury automobiles intended for political office holders and administrative officials. This considerable expenditure underscores the level of priority the state government has placed on official transportation, though it has also sparked debates about balancing luxury with fiscal responsibility.

Public reaction and calls for prudence

The gesture has drawn a wave of public attention, with many observers divided on its timing and necessity. While some residents have applauded Governor Eno for honouring former deputy governors and maintaining a culture of recognition, others have questioned the prudence of spending heavily on luxury vehicles in a state where resources could be channeled into healthcare, education, infrastructure, and job creation.

Critics argue that such spending reflects a broader issue of government priorities, suggesting that more effort should be directed toward policies and programs that directly benefit ordinary citizens. They also highlight that fiscal prudence is especially important given the growing economic challenges in the country. Supporters of the gesture, however, argue that rewarding past leaders helps maintain continuity, respect for service, and political stability in the state.

Governor Eno’s office has yet to address whether similar allocations will continue for other categories of political appointees or if this was a one-time initiative. The lack of clarity leaves open questions about the sustainability and transparency of such expenditures in the long term.
