A Wuse Magistrate Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of 27-year-old Chidera Njoku in prison custody after he was accused of issuing death threats against his mother, alongside multiple other offenses.
The suspect, who resides in Kabusa Village, is currently facing a total of six criminal charges. These include assault, theft, extortion, mischief, and criminal intimidation, all of which were formally presented before the court during his arraignment.
According to the prosecutor, C.C. Okafor, the case began when Chidera’s mother, Mrs. Ngozi Njoku, filed a complaint at the police station. She accused her son of not only threatening her life but also stealing her household items and violently attacking his sister.
The items allegedly stolen included a mobile phone valued at N140,000, a gas cylinder, bottles of cooking oil, and six bags of charcoal. Reports further indicated that the suspect allegedly assaulted his sister by flogging her with a motor engine belt, leaving her with visible injuries.
The situation escalated when Chidera allegedly demanded N200,000 from his mother. He reportedly threatened to kill her if she refused to provide the money, which intensified the family’s fears and led to immediate legal action.
After reviewing the charges and hearing the prosecutor’s submission, Magistrate Ekpenyong Inyang ruled that the accused should be kept in a correctional facility pending further court proceedings. The case has been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled to take place on October 6.
The matter continues to draw public attention as it highlights concerns about domestic violence, threats within family settings, and the legal system’s approach to addressing such serious allegations.
