According to the U.S. Embassy, the new funding is being channeled through the World Food Programme (WFP) and is specifically designed to provide life-saving support to conflict-affected communities in the North-East and North-West regions of Nigeria. This intervention comes at a time when escalating violence, climate shocks, and funding shortages are exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.

The breakdown of the support reveals that more than 43,235 children are expected to benefit from specialized nutrition packages, which will be distributed via electronic food vouchers. In addition, 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women will receive nutrition top-ups, aimed at preventing malnutrition and safeguarding maternal and child health during this critical period.

The World Food Programme has raised alarm that, without immediate action, over 150 nutrition clinics in Borno and Yobe States may be forced to shut down due to resource constraints. Such closures would have devastating consequences, as these facilities are currently providing essential services to thousands of people battling severe hunger.

In total, the WFP Nigeria programme, supported by this U.S. donation, will provide essential food and nutrition aid to an estimated 764,205 vulnerable individuals across both the North-East and North-West. This includes displaced families, women, and children who are among the hardest hit by the ongoing crisis.

The U.S. Embassy emphasized that this assistance is part of its broader humanitarian commitment to Nigeria, reaffirming its partnership with both the Nigerian government and international organizations working tirelessly to combat hunger and stabilize communities. Officials further noted that more interventions may follow if the situation continues to deteriorate.
