Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, a dancer, businesswoman, media personality, and the eldest child of Fela Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat musician, expressed her belief that Nigerians failed to recognize the significance of her father until after his death. Yeni discussed her father's treatment by the Nigerian government and its citizens during his lifetime, noting that his reputation grew posthumously.

Fela Kuti, widely regarded as one of the greatest Nigerians to have ever lived, left an indelible mark as an Afrobeat pioneer and cultural icon. Even 22 years after his passing, his legacy continues to thrive, in large part due to the relentless efforts of his children.

During an intimate interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Yeni shared a personal anecdote that highlighted the contrast in perception surrounding Fela. She recalled a past encounter where a girl refused to be introduced to her and her cousin, dismissing them as unworthy individuals. Yeni found it amusing how, years later, Fela transformed from being viewed as a villain to becoming a hero in the eyes of many.

Exploring the reasons behind this change, Yeni suggested that Nigerians gradually realized the truth about the societal issues Fela had been singing about and fighting against. Fela used to publish advertisements in the Daily Times (later Punch) every Saturday, tagging them as "Chief Priest says," where he would openly criticize Nigeria. Through his own printing press, he fearlessly printed and mocked those in power. Sadly, it took his death for people to recognize the loss of something truly significant.

Yeni also discussed her involvement with the TV program "Your View" on TVC, explaining that she had previously attempted to launch a similar project with her best friend, Carol King. However, it didn't materialize until Lukman Musa approached her with the opportunity. Yeni believes that joining the show was a positive decision, allowing her to be known as Yeni Anikulapo Kuti, rather than solely as Fela's daughter or Femi's sister.

This heartfelt interview showcases Yeni Kuti's perspective on her father's enduring legacy and the evolving perception of his contributions to Nigerian society.
