Popular media personality Nedu has once again stirred heated conversations on social media after drawing a bold comparison between roads in the United Kingdom (UK) and those in Nigeria. His remarks have left many Nigerians reacting differently, with some agreeing with his observations while others strongly criticized his analysis.

In a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), Nedu was seen standing on a very narrow residential road with cars parked tightly on both sides. The road appeared so small that he stretched out his arms and could almost touch the parked vehicles to his left and right at the same time.

While expressing his surprise at how narrow the road was, Nedu pointed out that such a street would never be able to conveniently take two cars side by side. He noted that Nigeria, which prides itself as the “Giant of Africa,” has far wider roads compared to the UK. According to him, in Nigeria, even regular streets allow two cars to move comfortably without issues, unlike what he observed in the UK.

The comedian and OAP insisted that Nigerians often underestimate their country by always glorifying foreign lands, when in fact, some infrastructural elements in Nigeria are actually better than in Europe. His comment that Nigerian roads are “far wider and more convenient” sparked outrage, as many netizens felt he was misleading people by failing to acknowledge the overall quality, organization, and maintenance of UK roads compared to Nigeria’s.

Nedu’s statements quickly attracted massive reactions from Nigerians online, with hundreds weighing in on whether his comparison was fair or exaggerated.

Reactions to the viral video

Sheuuuuu wrote: “I don’t even mind the tiny roads, but did you see potholes everywhere? Exactly, you can’t because there are none. Big-for-nothing Giant of Africa, we boast of wide roads but they are filled with craters and floods every rainy season.”

Favour commented: “Giant Dey run go meet ant. Your wife is pregnant—UK. You want to send kids to good school—UK. You want proper medical service during serious illness—UK. Holiday—UK. Buy good vehicle—UK. Your sold-out shows—UK. Everything good you want in life—UK. Na only when you die you remember Nigeria. Don’t compare abeg.”

Mr Prolific argued: “That is clearly a one-way residential road. You can’t enter from the same direction you exited. That’s why all the cars are facing one exit direction.‼️‼️‼️ These are not main roads but small neighborhood streets. If the UK had the level of natural resources Nigeria has, their streets would probably be paved with gold by now.”

Carla wrote: “This guy is misleading people. This is not a main road but a residential two-way road with specific parking rules. UK has strict urban planning. Nigerian roads may be wide, but the driving culture is chaotic. A fair comparison cannot be based on width alone.”

Oghale Osagie added: “At least the UK roads are properly organized and drivers there are disciplined. Before you even pass your driving test, they drill you and ensure you follow every traffic rule. Unlike Nigeria, where yes, the roads are wide, but drivers do whatever they like, disobey rules, and put lives at risk daily, especially in Lagos.”

Nedu’s controversial remarks have therefore reopened debates about infrastructure and governance in Nigeria versus Western countries, as many feel width should not be the only yardstick to judge road quality.
