Nigerian dancer Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau, widely known as Kaffy, recently opened up about the origins of her dance journey, revealing that she initially took up dancing as a means to enhance her mental health.
The renowned dancer shared this personal insight during a recent interview with Channels TV, where she provided a glimpse into her upbringing. Kaffy reflected on the challenges of navigating life as a teenager in an environment marked by her parents' divorce, describing how dancing became a coping mechanism for her during those difficult times.
Kaffy elaborated on her journey, expressing that dancing served as an art form that provided solace and an escape to a realm where she could explore her identity and potential.
In her words:
“Before I even thought of dancing as a profession, I always saw it as something to help me with my mental health.
“And growing up in that average Nigerian household, you have divorced parenting. You are trying to navigate through life as a young teenager. Dancing was the art form in which I found solace. I used it as an escape to somewhere I could become something.
And when I related with others in the social environment, I found out that people needed some escape. I started exploring that at the national stadium until I found the entertainment space.”
This revelation highlights the transformative power of dance for Kaffy, not only as a personal outlet for mental well-being but also as a medium to connect with others and bring joy through her dance skills.
