Worker steals and withdraws N2.5m using ex-employer's cheque book

Police have arraigned one Victor Williams before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, Nigeria for allegedly stealing N2.5 million from his ex-employer's cheque book. The accused, Victor, was said to have also forged his ex-employer, Alhaji Moshood’s signature on the cheque and withdrew over N2 million from the account without the owner's consent. Williams was arraigned before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka on three counts of stealing and forgery on Thursday.

The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the offense contravened and is punishable under Sections 411 and 287(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State. According to the charge read in court, Victor Williams is alleged to have unlawfully withdrawn N500,000 from the account of his ex-employer, Adekunle Moshood, in the Magodo area of the state over the counter and subsequently transferred N2 million into his account without the consent of the original owner of the account, thereby committing an offense punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges read to him in English. Following his plea, Magistrate Nwaka granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned until May 17, 2023, for further hearing.
