Tinubu becomes Nigeria's 16th President

On Monday, May 29th, 2023, the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, were officially sworn in as the President and Vice President of Nigeria, respectively. The responsibility of administering the Oath of Office on Monday was entrusted to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kayode Ariwoola.

Tinubu, a former Senator and governor of Lagos State, emerged as the winner of the presidential election held in February 2023, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. He secured a total of 8,794,726 votes, defeating his closest competitor, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received 6,984,520 votes. Peter Obi of the Labour Party secured the third position with 6,101,533 votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came in fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
