This alarming situation was first revealed by a social media user who shared an update on their page, informing others that the thieves have been operating around the MAPOLY area for some time. According to the post, the criminals primarily focus on breaking into student rooms, stealing electronics, and later contacting the victims with demands for ransom to recover their stolen belongings.

The user explained that after the break-ins, the thieves typically leave behind their Telegram contact details, instructing the victims to reach out if they wish to pay for the return of their gadgets. The message outlines the disturbing process the victims must go through to reclaim their items. The thieves reportedly demand $100 (or more, depending on the market value of the device) and insist on receiving payment in cryptocurrency through a ‘generated’ payment link. Once the payment is made, the thieves follow up with photos of the victim’s house and the exact location where the stolen devices can be retrieved, along with specific instructions regarding the time for pickup.

The post detailed the modus operandi of the thieves: “There’s a thief or a gang of thieves currently operating around the student areas of MAPOLY in Abeokuta. They get a tip, break into students’ rooms, steal their phones or laptops, and leave a note with a Telegram handle for them to message if they want to recover their device(s).” The message continued, emphasizing the fear and vulnerability students feel as they navigate this unsettling situation, stating, “When contacted, they demand $100 (more or less), depending on the market value of the device, and ask for payment in crypto via a ‘generated’ payment link.”

In response to the increasing reports of theft, local authorities have now dedicated resources to apprehending the perpetrators and restoring a sense of security in the area. Following the revelation of this scheme, another user reported that one of the thieves had been captured, sharing a video that showed the suspect’s face, providing some hope that justice might be served and the situation could be contained.
