A female student at the University of Ilorin has tragically taken her own life after suffering a devastating loss of N500,000 to a deceitful lover she initially met on Snapchat. The 20-year-old student, identified as Sanni Hameedat, was enrolled in the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the time of this unfortunate incident.
According to reports, Hameedat entrusted her mother's N500,000 to an internet lover who ultimately turned out to be a heartless scammer. The situation took a grim turn when her mother required the money to be returned, and the online lover abruptly vanished, severing all contact with Hameedat.
Desperate to repay the borrowed sum and under tremendous financial strain, the student sought assistance from lending app agents, further exacerbating her financial woes. Regrettably, these circumstances plunged her into a deep state of depression, ultimately leading her to take her own life.
The school administration issued a statement confirming this heartbreaking situation, attributing the cause of suicide to financial misappropriation. They revealed that Hameedat had been entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother and had crossed paths with the deceptive individual on Snapchat, leading to a bond of friendship.
The statement from the school continued, stating, “When the boy claimed that his mother was battling breast cancer and urgently needed N500,000, the compassionate and emotional lady decided to help him by lending him half of the N1 million she held for her mother, with the boy promising to repay the borrowed money. However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all contact, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled, and in order to make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.”
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils that can arise from online interactions and the devastating consequences of financial exploitation in vulnerable situations.
