A mild uproar unfolded within the Nigerian Senate on Monday, sparked by disagreements among lawmakers during the screening process of Festus Keyamo as a nominee for a ministerial position.
Tensions arose due to Keyamo's past refusal, during his tenure as the Minister of State for Labour and Employment in President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, to heed invitations from various committees in both the 9th Senate and 9th House of Representatives.
Ministerial nominee, Festus Keyamo[/figure]Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe urged Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to suspend Keyamo's screening until he acknowledges the Senate's authority to summon and interrogate any Minister and their respective Ministry.
When a voice vote was taken, the Senate failed to reach a consensus on the subsequent course of action, leading to a tumultuous session.
Once the chaos subsided, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed extending the session's duration and transitioning into a closed-door meeting within the upper legislative Chambers.
