Health authorities have verified the emergence of a highly mutated Covid variant labeled the 'real deal' in the UK, sparking concerns about a potential resurgence of infections.
This variant, scientifically referred to as BA.X/BA.2.86 and nicknamed Pirola, was identified in a hospitalized patient in London, as reported by virus-tracking researchers. This case represents the initial instance of the variant detected within the UK, indicating local transmission.
The patient's identity remains undisclosed, but it is believed they contracted the BA.X/BA.2.86 variant within the UK.
Though the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) hasn't shared the exact count of identified cases, experts suggest this finding points to broader circulation of the variant.
Previously, only six cases of this variant had been recorded globally, with instances in the United States, Denmark, and Israel. Notably, the Danish cases were geographically dispersed and unrelated, hinting at community transmission.
Dr. Meera Chand, Deputy Director of UKHSA, acknowledged the detection of the BA.X/BA.2.86 variant in the UK.
“We are aware that BA.2.86 has been detected in the UK.
“UKHSA is assessing the situation and will provide further information in due course,” said Dr. Meera Chand.
Dr. Luke Blagdon Snell, an infectious diseases and microbiology specialist, disclosed that a patient at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London had been diagnosed with the BA.X/BA.2.86 variant.
Notably, the infection appears to have been locally acquired, with no immediate connection to cases observed elsewhere globally.
