Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his support for the idea of a female president leading Nigeria. He shared his thoughts on this matter during the 5th edition of the Egba Dialect Debate and Choral Competition for Secondary Schools in Ogun Central Senatorial District, held in Abeokuta. The event, organized by Dr. Lanre Tejuoso, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, featured a debate session with the theme "Nigeria is ripe for a female president."
During his speech at the event, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of power being shared equally between genders for the growth and development of the country. He stated that when both genders have an equal opportunity to participate in leadership, Nigeria will become stronger. Obasanjo highlighted that there are no fundamental differences between genders, except for the fact that only females can get pregnant, which should not be a barrier to a female becoming the president of the country. According to him, experience and expertise can be gained from both genders, and it is essential to consider both when striving for progress.
Deputy Governor Naimot Salako-Oyedele of Ogun State supported Obasanjo's stance on having a female president. She emphasized the need to actively involve women in politics, starting from grassroots levels, so that they can gain the necessary experience to lead the country. Salako-Oyedele highlighted the gender imbalance in various political positions within Ogun State, such as the low representation of females among councillors, chairpersons, members of the House of Assembly, and senators. She urged for more opportunities for women to participate in politics and progress to higher leadership roles based on their capabilities and performance.
In conclusion, Obasanjo's endorsement of a female president for Nigeria aligns with his belief in gender equality and the potential for women to contribute significantly to the nation's progress. The support from Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele further emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities and empowering women in politics at all levels.
