The senator representing Edo north, Adams Oshiomhole, has asserted that Nigerians are currently grappling with the "consequences" of the "reckless" policies implemented during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Oshiomhole, who served as the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from 2018 to 2020, made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday.
Oshiomhole emphasized that President Bola Tinubu should not be held accountable for the decisions made by the previous administration, whether right or wrong. When questioned about the role of the APC in Nigeria's current economic challenges, he defended his party, stating that he prioritizes national interests over partisan concerns. Oshiomhole admitted to criticizing some of the policies implemented during Buhari's tenure, including rejecting the currency redesign policy that caused significant distress to Nigerians.
He expressed his loyalty to the Nigerian nation and highlighted how he, along with other governors, opposed certain policies through legal means. Oshiomhole pointed out that the enduring consequences of those policies are still affecting the country today.
Addressing the party's role in the previous administration, Oshiomhole clarified that although the APC was in power, Tinubu was neither a cabinet member nor an adviser. He asserted that Tinubu should not be held responsible for the government's actions, be they positive or negative. Buhari, who ruled Nigeria on the APC platform from 2015 to 2023, handed over to Tinubu, the party's presidential candidate in the last general election.
In the lead-up to the 2023 elections, Tinubu repeatedly promised Nigerians that he would build on Buhari’s legacy. He commended the "achievements" of the Buhari-led administration during his campaign.
