Geoffrey Onyeama, the Nigerian Foreign Affairs minister, has announced that the Federal Government will evacuate stranded Nigerians from Sudan by road, due to the impossibility of evacuating such a large number of people through aircraft. Reports indicate that a lot of Nigerians have been stranded in Sudan following a power tussle which has caused some crises in the country. According to Onyeama, the Nigerian government has been given the cost estimate and all the details for the evacuation of about 5,500 stranded Nigerians from Sudan. However, the airports in Sudan are out of commission, hence the only viable way out is by road. He further explained that Nigeria's situation is particularly challenging because of the large number of stranded citizens. Onyeama noted that some countries like the US and European countries have started evacuating, but what they've been evacuating were their diplomatic staff and not their citizens. The Nigerian government cannot evacuate all its diplomatic staff at the moment because they also need to coordinate the evacuation of all those students that need to be evacuated. The government will provide security and a safe corridor for the evacuation of the stranded Nigerians.
