The Managing Director of LadyBenz Auto-Mechanic Ltd., Joy Obi, shared her insights on the short lifespan of vehicles in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Obi emphasized that the poor maintenance culture in the country is a significant factor contributing to this issue. She stressed the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, both for enhancing the aesthetics of the vehicles and ensuring their optimal performance.

Obi expressed concern over the lack of attention given to vehicle maintenance, which often leads to accidents on Nigerian roads. She pointed out that many vehicle owners and commercial drivers neglect the manufacturers' maintenance instructions and use engines without proper adherence. Unfortunately, the average Nigerian tends to overlook such crucial details.

According to Obi, most vehicle manufacturers specify the specific type of oil suitable for engines, but to cut costs, many people opt for cheaper oil, which can potentially damage the engine. She highlighted the significance of regularly changing the oil to keep the engine well lubricated, reduce friction and wear, and maintain its optimal functioning. Routine maintenance plays a vital role in minimizing breakdowns, maximizing reliability, and preventing unexpected and costly repairs, thereby instilling confidence in the vehicle's performance.

Furthermore, Obi emphasized the essential maintenance of components such as brakes, tires, and suspension systems to ensure road safety. She stated that addressing minor issues early on and adhering to recommended service intervals can significantly extend the lifespan of a vehicle. Obi also stressed the need for vehicle owners to pay attention to the check engine light or malfunction indicator light (MIL), as it often indicates issues with the engine or emission control system.

In addition, Obi highlighted the significance of paying attention to details such as the condition of the front and rear glasses, brake lights, the color of smoke from the exhaust pipe, and the condition of the plugs. All these elements work harmoniously to ensure the efficiency of the vehicle. Regular car tire pressure checks were also encouraged by the auto-mechanic, as they contribute to balanced vehicle performance and even tire wear.

Obi pointed out that incorrect tire pressure could lead to brake failure, unstable vehicle movement, and other problems that may result in accidents. She also addressed the issue of changing brake pads, noting that many motorists wait until the brakes are completely worn out before considering replacements, highlighting the importance of proactive maintenance practices.

The auto-mechanic urged vehicle owners and commercial drivers to adopt a culture of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent breakdowns on highways. Considering the high rate of inflation in the country, she emphasized that paying attention to vehicle maintenance can help avoid spending excessive amounts of money on repairs.

Mr. Kayode Ibidapo, Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), supported Obi's statements during a general meeting and seminar organized by the association. He added that poorly maintained vehicles are likely to consume more fuel, advising car owners to adhere to routine vehicle maintenance practices to minimize fuel expenses. Ibidapo emphasized the proactive thinking required from vehicle owners, especially considering the current fuel prices.

The seminar, titled "Vehicle Maintenance (Routine and Major Maintenance)," aimed to raise awareness and promote responsible vehicle maintenance practices. It is worth noting that Joy Obi is also a member of NATE, further highlighting her expertise and involvement in the field of automotive maintenance.
