Reports indicate that Nigeria's oil production surged from 1.1 million barrels per day in April 2023 to 1.3 million barrels per day in May 2023, solidifying its status as Africa's top crude oil producer.

This information was made public by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which relies on secondary sources for its data. The OPEC June 2023 Monthly Oil Market Report confirmed Nigeria's ascendancy in crude oil output for May 2023.

The data revealed that Nigeria surpassed Angola, whose output stood at 1.1 million barrels per day, thus securing its position as the highest producer in Africa. Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea emerged as the continent's lowest producer, with a daily output of 56,000 barrels.

OPEC stated, "According to secondary sources, total OPEC-13 crude oil production averaged 28.06 million barrels per day in May 2023, showing a month-on-month decrease of 464,000 barrels per day. Nigeria, IR Iran, and Angola were the main contributors to the increase in crude oil output, while production in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait experienced declines."
