Mohbad, Nigerian artist and songwriter. Source: Google[/figure]Kemi Olunloyo, known for her outspoken nature, decided to shed light on the situation amidst a cloud of accusations, suspicions, and rumors surrounding Mohbad's untimely passing.
She boldly asserted that Mohbad played a pivotal role in elevating the fame of Marlian Music and, according to her estimations, was the creative force behind approximately 97% of the label's music compositions.
In a tweet, she shared her findings: "MOHBAD’S MUSIC ESTATE: After my research monitoring streams and the Imolenization CAC search, I discovered that Mohbad as of today is worth N700M, roughly around $690,000. Naira Marley owes him N~300M in song royalties. On my X Spaces, I mentioned the top 3 songwriters in Nigeria as Tiwa, Teni, and the third person is actually Mohbad. Mohbad wrote almost 97% of all the songs at Marlian Music."
She highlighted the significance of songwriters receiving royalties and mentioned @SOCANFoundation as an example from her time as a Canadian 🇨🇦 Grammy Judge at the @TheJUNOAwards.
Kemi Olunloyo went on to reveal that Mohbad had raised concerns about Naira Marley withholding his royalties, streaming revenues, and downloads, indicating a strained business relationship between them. She emphasized the need for artist developers in Nigeria to foster a more positive industry atmosphere, free from the influences of drugs and cultism.
She also commented on the broader industry dynamics, suggesting that many label bosses and top figures in the music industry remained silent on such matters due to affiliations with the same cult. She pointed out the challenges faced by artists in navigating contractual obligations and the need for transparency in record deals.
Furthermore, Kemi Olunloyo raised questions about the handling of Mohbad's estate, calling for a court-appointed probate lawyer to manage his music assets if Naira Marley released the funds. She suggested that Mohbad's son undergo a DNA test for paternity confirmation, after which all music assets should be placed in a trust fund until he reaches adulthood.
Kemi Olunloyo concluded by urging individuals to be cautious when signing record deals, emphasizing the importance of understanding contract terms and obligations. She drew parallels with past situations, such as Davido's early career struggles, where contract buyouts were necessary.
In closing, Kemi Olunloyo, who has been a music journalist for two decades, offered her insights into the music industry and the challenges faced by artists, highlighting the importance of transparency and proper estate planning.
