A Nigerian woman’s engagement has reportedly come to an abrupt end after her fiancé expressed discomfort regarding her recent job offer and the significantly higher salary that accompanied it.
According to a close friend, identified as @Starbede on X (formerly Twitter), the woman, who got engaged in May and had plans for a traditional wedding in November, secured a new position last month. This new role offers a salary that is three times more than what her fiancé currently earns, which sparked tensions between the couple.
Rather than celebrating her achievement and success, her fiancé insisted that she reject the job offer, citing concerns that her increased earnings would lead to a lack of respect within their relationship. He expressed that he feared her financial success would undermine his role as the provider and, ultimately, their partnership.
How a man called off marriage over his fiancée’s high-paying job
The friend shared the distressing details, stating, “My friend got engaged in May this year and their traditional wedding was meant to be in November. She called me yesterday in tears to tell me the engagement had been called off. She got a new job last month, and the salary is so huge that she will earn three times more than the guy. He was uncomfortable with it and asked her to reject it or the engagement would be called off. He said she won’t respect him if she earns that much.”
The friend continued, emphasizing the heartbreaking nature of the situation: “All efforts to convince him proved ineffective, and she agreed to call the engagement off. I can’t believe this is happening in 2024!” The emotional weight of the story underscores the societal issues surrounding gender roles and financial dynamics in relationships, raising questions about equality and respect between partners.
