Debbie describes her father as a strict disciplinarian who constantly belittled her based on her academic struggles, despite her evident intelligence. The emotional abuse reached a breaking point, prompting her to leave her home in the Northern part of Nigeria for Lagos, seeking a fresh start and better opportunities.

How I moved to Lagos without knowing anybody

Debbie reflects on her challenging journey, stating, "Finished secondary school at age 14, couldn’t get admission even in my state." Her father's unsupportive stance and archaic views led her to take up various jobs, including selling okrika clothes, working as a salesgirl, and even as a waitress, just to keep herself occupied and escape the taunts at home.

Despite her efforts, the situation did not improve, and after 2-4 years, she made the bold decision to move to Lagos, hoping for better opportunities. Debbie embarked on this journey alone, arriving in Lagos without knowing anyone and with nowhere to stay.

During her bus journey to Lagos, she encountered a pastor who showed concern for her well-being. Fearing judgment, she initially lied about her experience in Lagos. Eventually, she confided in the pastor, who extended support by connecting her with a job and facilitating the admission she had long desired.

Debbie acknowledges the challenges she faced during her stay with the pastor's family but emphasizes that it was a pivotal point in her life. She is now on the verge of graduating, has taken up responsibilities for her siblings and cousins, and has become her father's favorite child, with her opinions now valued at home.

In conclusion, Debbie shares her gratitude for the progress she has made and the responsibilities she has taken on. She emphasizes that only visible results seem to validate one's efforts, and she attributes her achievements to divine intervention and perseverance. Despite the challenges, she remains resilient and grateful for the journey she has undertaken.
