A Nigerian lawyer currently based in the US has taken to Twitter to express his regrets about the negative consequences of relocating to another country in search of better opportunities. @ike_obiora, as he is known on Twitter, revealed that his decision to move overseas has resulted in him missing out on three significant family occasions, including the funeral of his beloved grandmother who raised him and his two uncles. He shared two photos, one showing his grandmother and another showing him with his cousins at a family gathering.

He went on to say that he has not seen some of his nephews since their birth, and he is worried that his children will miss out on the same familial bonding and relationship that he had growing up. He asked, "To japa is good, no doubt, but at what cost exactly?"
He continued to lament the erosion of the very things that made him who he is and called for Nigeria to work towards improving the country's situation. He concluded by saying, "We can’t continue like this in perpetuity."
The lawyer's heartfelt message resonated with many Nigerians on social media, who shared their own stories of missing out on important family events due to living abroad. The conversation also highlighted the difficulties faced by Nigerians who choose to stay in their home country, such as lack of job opportunities and security concerns.
