The circumstances leading to this situation involve the suspension of the former EFCC Chairman, Bola Tinubu, due to alleged misconduct during his tenure. The suspension was announced by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Secretary to the Government of the Federation's office. The decision to suspend Bola Tinubu stemmed from serious allegations of abuse of office. The purpose of the suspension is to allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct while serving as EFCC Chairman. Subsequently, the Department of State Services (DSS) invited Bola Tinubu for questioning.

Following the suspension of Bola Tinubu, Abdulkarim Chukkol was appointed as the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, assuming the responsibilities of leading the anti-corruption agency during this interim period.
