The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) took decisive action by conducting a raid on a Chinese supermarket situated in Abuja on Monday, April 22, in response to alarming reports alleging discriminatory practices against Nigerians attempting to enter the establishment.
The raid followed a wave of public outcry on Sunday, as Nigerians expressed their indignation via social media platforms, condemning the actions of the management of the Chinese supermarket in Abuja for reportedly barring entry to Nigerian citizens.
The supermarket, situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in the Federal Capital Territory, is renowned for its assortment of Chinese cuisine and beverages.
Of significant note, reports indicate that access to the supermarket is purportedly restricted exclusively to Chinese nationals.
Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager of the complex, acknowledged that individuals who are not of Chinese descent are indeed barred from shopping within the premises. However, he clarified that Nigerian residents within the complex are permitted entry for shopping purposes.
While the supermarket remains shuttered, concerns have been raised by the FCCPC regarding the possibility of individuals hiding within the premises to evade interaction with the regulatory agency.
