Indications suggest that the Department of State Services (DSS) re-arrested former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, shortly after he was granted bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Emefiele was arraigned before Justice Nicholas Oweibo on charges of illegal possession of firearms. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million with one surety.
After the court adjourned the case, Emefiele remained in the courtroom for several hours. News reporters present at the court premises speculated that the DSS might re-arrest him.
When a senior officer from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) attempted to take Emefiele into custody as per the court's directive for remand, the DSS resisted. A faceoff ensued between the DSS and NCoS officials.
Finally, at around 3:15 pm, the DSS intercepted Emefiele as he stepped out of the courtroom and took him away in a police vehicle. The reason for his re-arrest by the DSS remains unclear.
