In Ekiti State, the plight of teachers and pupils at Wesley United Primary School in Iworo, Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area has sparked deep concern, as they are now forced to abandon learning for survival tasks.
The roof of the school building was violently blown off by heavy wind, leaving classrooms flooded and turning what should be a place of education into an unsafe and hazardous environment. Pupils and teachers, rather than focusing on learning, now spend hours scooping out water and trying to salvage what little space they can use.
Videos circulating online captured heartbreaking scenes of children wading through flooded classrooms, while their teachers desperately attempted to scoop out stagnant, greenish water. Books and desks were soaked, and the air was thick with dampness, signaling how unfit the classrooms have become for learning.
Collapse halts learning completely
Since the roofing sheets were torn away, formal lessons have come to a complete stop. Teachers admitted that on Monday alone, they spent the entire morning trying to drain water, with little success. “We don’t even have time to teach anymore. Every rainfall floods the classrooms again, and the children can’t sit down inside,” one teacher lamented.

Teachers fear tragedy
Educators also expressed fears that the weakened walls and beams could eventually collapse, especially under continuous rainfall. They warned that unless urgent repair work is carried out, the structure may pose life-threatening risks to both children and staff.
Community cries out
Members of the Iworo community have called the situation a ticking time bomb, describing it as a “disaster waiting to happen.” With the roof gone, children are left vulnerable to harsh weather, and stagnant pools of green water have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and disease.
Parents raise concerns
Parents of the pupils have also spoken out, voicing their fears about the dangers of sending their children to a school on the verge of collapse. Many admitted that while they want to withdraw their children, they simply have no alternative schools within reach. “We are afraid, but where else can we take them? Government has abandoned us,” one parent said.

Residents recall years of neglect
According to residents, the school has been in a deteriorating state for years. They alleged that politicians often arrive during election seasons, take photos, and promise quick intervention, but disappear once the elections are over. “We’ve been neglected for too long, and now our children are suffering the worst of it,” a community elder stated.
Now, with the roof completely gone and children exposed to harsh conditions, calls for intervention have grown louder.
Appeal to government and stakeholders
The community is appealing to Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State to act swiftly before tragedy strikes. They are also calling on the Ministry of Education, humanitarian organizations, and philanthropists to come to their aid where the state government has failed.
Community leaders warned that unless urgent steps are taken, the building could collapse on pupils one day, turning a preventable disaster into a national tragedy.
