A heartbreaking incident involving a Nigerian widow has sparked outrage online after reports surfaced that her employer allegedly deducted N47,000 from her monthly salary of N50,000, leaving her with just N3,000 to survive on.
According to a detailed Facebook update shared via Amanda Chisom’s page, the woman, who works as a cleaner and is also a struggling mother of four children, had missed several days of work because she was attending to one of her sick children. Despite reaching out to the Human Resources (HR) department to explain her absence and officially seeking permission, her explanation was reportedly disregarded. Instead, she was issued a formal query, and a huge part of her salary was deducted, a decision that has been described as both unfair and inhumane by many social media users.

The widow’s story took a turn when she attended a church service shortly after the incident. During the service, her pastor publicly called her out before the congregation and offered her immediate financial assistance. He transferred N100,000 to her account on the spot and further promised to support her by setting up a Point of Sale (POS) business for her. True to his word, the POS machine was delivered, and she has already started running the business as an additional means of livelihood.
In addition to the pastor’s intervention, other members of the church rallied around her, contributing another N100,000 to support her and her children. This outpour of compassion provided the widow with not only financial relief but also hope for a fresh start as she continues to raise her family.
The incident has since gone viral, attracting a flood of reactions from Nigerians on social media. Many condemned the company’s HR department for what they described as an “abuse of power” and “lack of empathy.”
One user, identified as Loveth Okinel, expressed outrage, stating, “That HR has no right to deduct her salary. She can sue the company.” Her comment highlighted the legal implications of such salary deductions without due process.
Similarly, another netizen, Queen Debs, drew parallels to her own mother’s workplace, writing, “Some HR are so evil, just like my mom’s company, they are evil, they don’t even want you to succeed.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Martins Ike shared his personal frustration, saying, “These stupid HR’s they were the major reason I left my current work place of two years.” His statement resonated with others who claimed to have suffered at the hands of insensitive HR policies.
However, not all comments focused solely on criticism. Orji Augustine shifted attention to the positive role the church played in the widow’s life, remarking, “I recommend that kind of church, not all this pay your tithe and offering kind of church.” His comment emphasized the importance of religious institutions providing practical help to their members beyond spiritual teachings.
